State Tournament - Playoffs -
15.0 years ago

The Mountain Lions entered this year's playoffs as the 10th seed of 32 and faced Colorado Springs' Cheyenne Mtn HS on Saturday October 11th.  On a cold and rainy day, the Lions defeated CMHS 12-2 and then went on to a come from behind defeat of Pueblo Centennial by a score of 5-4.  In game one, Kelly Scribner won in the circle and added a first inning home run as well.  In game two, Jessica Shadowen hit a 3 run triple to get the Lions back in the game and Jasmine Grentz hit a solo home run to seal the victory leaving the Lions Regional Champions for the first time.

At the state playoffs, the Lions enjoyed much better weather and bested a tough squad from Lewis-Palmer 3-2 in eight innings.  Kellie Eastman had the single that won the game.  In game two, the Lions notched the biggest win in school history by avenging two losses (and six straight) to the Northern Conference Champion Northridge Grizzlies 1-0 in nine innings.  Jasmine Grentz had the walk-off double that drove home Ashlee Dennis from second base to seal the victory.  Kelly Scribner stayed tough and endured en route to pitching 17 innings on the day.

The season ended for the Lions in the Final Four versus league opponent, Frederick.  In a hotly contested game, the Lions fell 1-0.  With the season on the line, senior Ashley Kerbel fought valiantly through 16 pitches before succombing and grounding out to third with the tying run on third base.

The Lions finish this historic season with a record of 18-6, finished 2nd in the Northern Conference (tying a program best), winning a Regional Tournament (best in school history), and appearing in the 4A Final Four (first time in school history).  They lose four great seniors - Sarah Baumann, Ashley Kerbel, Joanne Frang, and Audrey Lorenz, but return 7 starters for the 2009 season.

The team wishes to thank everyone who supported the team this year from teachers and staff at MVHS, the student body, the community, and especially the parents, always outnumbering the opposition.  See you '09!
